Is a Career a Wasted Life?

Empty office cubicles, representing the wasted life opportunities of working on things you don't enjoy.

A career is a wasted life – well, possibly. That depends on whether you get satisfaction out of working for someone else, and building someone else’s dream. But is your job what you really want to spend your time doing? Does it bring with it a deep sense of satisfaction and enjoyment at what you’ve accomplished?

The SDAS Mission Statement

The Slow Down and Save mission statement is about reaching your death bed and being able to look back on a life that wasn’t wasted. One where you achieved your full potential. One where you took the road less travelled rather than the well-trodden path, and one where you had to learn new skills and constantly challenge yourself.

I believe a career gives many people a strong sense of purpose, and hopefully for most people their work is at least something that partially interests them. But, like the creator of the video below, do you ever find yourself longing for something more? Something more than what work alone can offer you? It’s not necessarily the job itself, or even the money, but about having the time to work on something that is genuinely, 100%, yours.

Become financially independent and work on what you want

Don’t waste your life as a slave to your job. Save money from the beginning – at least 50% of your income – and invest it into the global stock market. Within 5 years, you’ll find you have FU Money and more leverage, and after about 15 years, you’ll be rapidly closing in on Financial Independence. Suddenly, you won’t need to work for an income any more. You’ll be able to find a way to reduce your hours – or quit entirely – and start spending time working on something that you’re passionate about, gives you a deep sense of joy and is completely, 100%, yours. Of course, there’s no obligation to do this – if you really do love your job then keep at it. No-one’s telling you what to do here.

The world would be a much healthier, more productive place if people were able to work on what they wanted to. (It’s not difficult given that, in the UK, the average office worker spends 2 hr 9 mins each day procrastinating, or over a quarter of a working day) I sure as shit don’t spend anywhere near that proportion of my time procrastinating when I’m working on my own, fun projects at home (like this website). Imagine the exciting new products and services that would be created if more people could work on what they wanted. This is the true power of financial independence… being able to spend your time how you want, not how your employer wants.

A short film you should watch

If you don’t do anything else to improve your life this week, please spare an extra 30 minutes to watch this film by Tom Scryleus. It’s quite long, but is well worth your time, and will give you some real perspective on life and work:
